Today, I got an email from Curtis Sherrod that the Hip-Hop Culture Center closed it’s doors after 5 years. What started off as a week project grew into a place where it became home of the meaning of Hip-Hop. While the center may not look like much to some people, it’s not what makes the place home; it’s what you do with your space. And Curtis done a lot.
For 5 years, Curtis educated the next generation on what Hip-Hop is all about from the four elements to actual demos using emcees and exhibits. However, it’s also noted for the annual Rap-a-thon, a collection of 125+ emcees of all skill levels and ages. I had partake in one myself (the 4th one) while taking pictures of the 5th Rapathon (work prevented me from going to practices, which was mandatory).
The video is a retrospect of all the events that happened over the past 5 years. Curtis hinted that while he closed the center, it’s not the end of the website or the activities that the center used to do. A Rapathon 6 is still possible. But we’ll have to wait and see.
As for me, I would give some time to make a Rapathon 6 happen. If we got to raise funds to do it, I’m willing to put some funds down for it.
Thanks for the memories, Curtis. I hope you’ll help create more. :)
